Golden Eagles Set for Josh Reidinger Invite

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's and women's outdoor track and field will compete in its fifth meet of the season at this weekend's Josh Reidinger Invite in Homewood, Alabama. Hosted by Samford, field events are slated for a Noon start with running events beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Thirty-four Golden Eagles will suit up with 15 women and 19 men competing at Shauna Yelton Field at Samford Track/Soccer Complex. Southern Miss is one of 11 teams competing on Friday and will be joined by Alabama State, Arkansas State, Chattanooga, Jacksonville State, New Orleans, Samford, South Alabama, Troy, UAB and West Georgia.
Southern Miss holds the top mark in eight different events, including the men's triple jump (Elijah Kellum), women's 4x100-meter relay, men's 4x100-meter relay, women's 100-meter (Valencia Watson), men's 100-meter (Nikoby Johnson), women's 200-meter (Kennedi Sanders), men's 200-meter (Valentino Rudolph) and men's 400-meter hurdles (Javel Fullerton). In addition to Johnson's top mark in the men's 100 meters, six of the eight runners in the top heat are Golden Eagles.
In their last time out at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia, the Golden Eagles enjoyed seven top 10 finishes on the women's side and eight top 10 finishes from the men. Emme Bates took gold in the 1,500-meters with a mark of 4 minutes, 18.30 seconds from lane seven. Bates turned in a 51.82 second split on the first 300 and subsequently tallied splits of 1:08.88, 1:08.42 and 1:09.19 to reach her podium finish.
Javel Fullerton took the top spot on the podium in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.74 seconds in lane five. Tyler Nichols broke into first place in the long jump on his third jump, leaping 26-7 (8.10m) on his third attempt. De'Aundre Ward followed behind him with a 26 3/4 mark on attempt three. Nichols' mark also moved him to third in the nation in long jump and earned him Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Week honors yesterday.
Elsewhere, Markeith Thompson took second overall in the 100-meter hurdles after running in lane one of the sixth heat. His 14.17 second mark placed him 0.4 seconds behind the overall winner.
