HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Pinch runner Ty Long scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th as No. 22 Southern Miss upended Texas State for a 5-4 Sun Belt Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to complete a three-game sweep.
The Golden Eagles (28-12 overall, 11-7 Sun Belt) collected their fifth walk-off victory of the year and 38th since the start of the 2017 season. It also marked the first extra-inning contest since defeating South Alabama 8-7 in 12 innings on March 29, 2025.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the 10th, Drey Barrett walked to open the frame off Bobcat reliever Alizaeh Gutierrez who entered to start the inning. Long was then summoned to pinch run for Barrett. After a flyout and a Tucker Stockman single which sent Long to third, the winning run scored on a pitch that bounced in the turf and got away from the catcher Clayton Namken.
Guitierrez suffered the loss as he allowed a run on a hit and a walk over a third of an inning to fall to 2-1.
Matthew Russo looked like he had put the Golden Eagles ahead for good 4-3 in the eighth on a solo home run to right for his seventh of the year, but Texas State got a one-out single and then a two-out, run-scoring double in the ninth by Dawson Park to tie the score, ending up sending the game into extra frames.
The Golden Eagles initially jumped out with two runs in the first frame. With one out, Joey Urban collected an infield single and scored a batter later on a Kyle Morrison double the was misplayed in left allowing Urban to score on the play. Morrison then scored on a single up the middle by Davis Gillespie.
The score was increased to 3-0 in the fourth as Urban knocked in Lawson Odom on a single to left. Urban, along Morrison and Russo had two hits each in the contest.
Texas State (25-15, 9-9) started a comeback with two runs in the fifth. Golden Eagle starter Camden Clark, who was making his first start of the year, had limited the Bobcats to just two singles over the first four innings. He gave up back-to-back two-out singles in the fifth before Chase Mora doubled home both runs. JW Armistead came in to get the final out of the fifth.
Clark finished the contest with two runs surrendered on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 frames.
The Bobcats tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh when Park knocked in his first run of the game with a single. Ethan Farris collected a walk with one out and advanced a base after a groundout and then a throwing error by Seth Smith at short, before scoring on the hit back to center.
Thomas Crabtree entered on the mound in the 10th and retired Texas State in order, which included a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 1-2. The six Golden Eagle pitchers combined to fan a season-high 17 Bobcat hitters.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they play host to Tulane at 6 p.m. It will be the team's final home non-conference game of the regular season.
