HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Kyle Morrison lofted a 2-2 pitch into right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to provide the game-winning single in lifting No. 18 Southern Miss to a 5-4 victory over Tulane Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (29-12) won their fourth in a row, while also defeating the Green Wave (21-21) for the eighth consecutive time. In addition, the win marked the second-straight walk-off for Southern Miss, the sixth of the year and the 39th since the start of the 2017 campaign.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the ninth, Ty Long drew a one-out walk. Seth Smith then bounced one over the Green Wave third baseman for a double to put two runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk to Joey Urban to load the bases, Morrison blooped the sixth pitch he saw from reliever Tom Vincent into short right field scoring Long with the winner.
Vincent (1-2) threw the final 1 1/3 for the Green Wave, allowing a run on two hits with two walks to suffer the loss.
Initially, Southern Miss jumped out with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Smith started things with a single up the middle and scored one batter later when Urban lifted Tulane starter Jack Brafa's pitch over the left field wall for his 10th of the year. It was the first of three homers in the game for the Golden Eagles as Drey Barrett added solo shots in both the second and fourth innings.
With Southern Miss leading 2-0, the Green Wave strung together four hits and a walk off Golden Eagle starter Cole Richardson in the second, with James Agabedis singling home two runs and Tye Wood knocking in another with a double.
Barrett tied the game in the second with his first homer of the game and then gave the Golden Eagles the 4-3 advantage in the fourth with his fourth homer. It marked the fourth time this season a Southern Miss player has belted two homers in a game.
Kros Sivley, who got the final out in the second to get out of the jam for Richardson with a flyout, retired 16 of the 17 batters he faced and finished the contest with 5 1/3 scoreless frames with just one walk and three strikeouts.
Thomas Crabtree, who entered in the eighth, worked around a leadoff double and an infield single, before getting a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts to avoid any damage. Colby Allen was inserted in in the ninth and fanned the first two batters he faced, before allowing Agabedis to homer to right to tie the game in the ninth. The long ball was the fifth homer for Agabedis.
Allen collected the win to improve to 4-1, giving up a run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they travel to Mobile to face South Alabama in a three-game league series. The set opens at 6:30 p.m., from Eddie Stanky Field.
