PEARL, Miss. – Tristan Bissetta had four hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead No. 25 Ole Miss over No. 22 Southern Miss 10-3 Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
The Golden Eagles (25-12) lost for the third consecutive game, while the Rebels improved to 27-11.
Southern Miss was outhit 11-8 in the contest but got two hits each from Matthew Russo and Gray Eubanks.
The Rebels put together five hits and took advantage of a Golden Eagle walk as they jumped out with a five-run third. Bissetta and Will Furniss each collected run-scoring singles, before pinch hitter Cannon Goldin singled in two more with a single to center field. Dom Decker finished the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.
Bissetta then extended the lead one frame later with a deep home run to right center for his 16th of the year.
Russo got the Golden Eagles on the board in the sixth with a solo home run to left for his sixth long ball.
Ole Miss, though, took advantage of two Golden Eagle errors in the bottom of the frame which led to four more unearned runs. Jed Utermark posted the first run as he reached on a Seth Smith fielding error. After the Rebels loaded the bases, Furniss cleared the bases with a three-run double to right to make the score 10-1.
A two-run seventh for the Golden Eagles cut into the final advantage. After a flyout, both Lawson Odom and Eubanks singled. Then Smith and Joey Urban then walked with the second one driving in a run. Kyle Morrison followed with an RBI groundout to complete the scoring.
Landon Keonig, the second of seven Ole Miss pitchers, lasted two innings and allowed no runs on one hit with three strikeouts to get the win and improve to 2-0. Bruce Littleton, who made his first Southern Miss start, went two-plus innings and allowed three runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
The Golden Eagles now return home to face Texas State in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The series starts Friday at 6 p.m., before continuing with a 3 p.m. Saturday tilt, before finishing Sunday at 12 noon.
