HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing on the road for the last weekends, the Southern Miss baseball team returns home this Friday to play Texas State in a key Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
The Golden Eagles (25-12 overall, 8-7 Sun Belt) are in a five-way tie for third place in the league standings along with South Alabama, ULM, Troy and Marshall, and are one game behind Texas State (25-12, 9-6) for second place.
Â
All three games can be viewed via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
The Golden Eagles look to snap a season-long three-game losing streak in the series, while the Bobcats enter play having won four of their last six.
Â
The two teams have met each year since the series was established in 2023, when the Golden Eagles joined the Sun Belt. Southern Miss holds a 6-4 advantage and won five of the last six games in the series.
Â
Four Golden Eagles currently are hitting over .300 for the squad including senior second baseman Kyle Morrison, who has batted .336 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI, all team highs. Junior shortstop Seth Smith ranks second at .325 with two homers and 20 RBI. He currently leads the team with an eight-game hitting streak, going .485 (16x33) over this stretch with seven runs, two doubles, a home run and 5 RBI.
Â
Senior center fielder Joey Urban ranks third on the club in batting with a .314 mark with nine home runs and 31 RBI, while junior left fielder Davis Gillespie is hitting .317 with nine homers and 28 RBI.
Â
Matthew Russo, who has batted at a .282 clip with six homers and 30 RBI, has reached base in each of his last 28 games, which is the longest streak of any Golden Eagle this season.
Â
The Golden Eagles are expected to return to their same starting pitchers for the first two games of the series. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Grayden Harris (6-1, 3.24 ERA) will open the things on the mound for the home squad this weekend, while sophomore right-hander Camden Sunstrom (2-3, 2.51 ERA) earns the nod on Saturday. Southern Miss has not named a starter for Sunday's game yet.
Â
The Golden Eagles complete a four-game homestand when they return to action Tuesday in a midweek matchup against Tulane. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
