Women’s Tennis Edges Georgia Southern in Saturday Home Thriller

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's tennis earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday morning at the USM Tennis Complex, taking the doubles point and then battling through a back-and-forth singles slate before Sakura Sudo delivered the clinching win on court two.
The Golden Eagles opened the day by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Sudo and Angelina Blinova set the tone with a 6-2 victory over Angelina Mihajlovic and Lisen Rinman at No. 1 doubles, while Pimmada Lim and Kamornwan Kornsila followed with a 6-4 win against Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match between Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu and the Georgia Southern pair of Evelyn Warkentin and Mackenzie Leopold was left unfinished at 5-4.
Georgia Southern answered quickly in singles, evening the match at 1-1 when Warkentin defeated Blinova 6-3, 6-2 on court one. The visitors then moved in front 2-1 with a straight-set win from Amelie Rosadoro over Lim at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
Southern Miss responded on court four, where Xu posted a steady 6-3, 6-4 win over Leopold to tie the match once again. Georgia Southern regained the lead moments later as Mihajlovic earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kornsila at No. 3 to make it 3-2.
With the match hanging in the balance, the Golden Eagles got a strong answer from Gagana Mohan Kumar on court six. Mohan Kumar handled Kijima in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to pull Southern Miss even at 3-3 and leave the decision to court two.
There, Sudo delivered the clincher. After taking the opening set 6-3, Sudo battled through a tight second set against Heinemann and closed out a 7-6 victory in the tiebreak to seal the 4-3 team win for Southern Miss.
