Southern Miss Opens Fall with Strong Showing in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. – Southern Miss women's tennis opened its fall schedule with a productive two days at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational, collecting 11 wins across singles and doubles Friday and Saturday at Culotta Tennis Center. The Golden Eagles finished the weekend with seven singles victories and four doubles wins, highlighted by several straight-set performances and a pair of three-set singles victories.
Southern Miss started the weekend with wins in both of its doubles matches Friday. Sakura Sudo and Pimmada Lim earned a 6-1 victory, while Kamornwan Kornsila and Manuella Persson followed with a 7-5 win.
Sudo carried that start into singles, taking her opening match 7-6 (3), 6-3. Lim had to work through a longer battle after dropping her first set, responding to take the second 7-5 before closing out a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory in the match tiebreak. The two singles wins gave Southern Miss four victories on the opening day.
The Golden Eagles followed with an even stronger showing Saturday, beginning with two more doubles wins. Kornsila and Persson made it a perfect weekend together with another 7-5 victory, while Miranda Xu and Alina Cherniaieva rolled to a 6-1 win.
Southern Miss then picked up five singles victories to close the event. Lim completed an unbeaten weekend in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Cherniaieva earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Kornsila controlled her match from the start in a 6-2, 6-2 decision, and Xu followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Mia Hasashi-Morrissey capped the weekend with one of Southern Miss' most competitive victories. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Hasashi-Morrissey responded with a 6-4 win in the second before taking the match tiebreak 10-6.
Kornsila and Persson finished the event 2-0 as a doubles pair, while Lim went 2-0 in singles and added a doubles victory alongside Sudo. Six different Golden Eagles earned at least one singles win during the two-day event.
