HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tucker Stockman registered a go-ahead, seventh inning sacrifice fly and Camden Clark threw 2 1/3 scoreless frames down the stretch to lift No. 12 Southern Miss to a 5-4 Sun Belt Conference series clinching victory over Troy Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (19-5 overall, 3-3 Sun Belt) won for the third time and won their eighth time over the last nine meetings with the Trojans (10-13, 3-3).
With the score tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Matthew Russo opened the frame with a walk. After a flyout to left and a wild pitch, freshman Gray Eubanks – who produced his season-best three hits – singled to left with Stockman following with a lineout deep to right which allowed Russo to score what would be the winning run.
In the top of the frame with the game still tied and a pair of runners in scoring position and two outs, Clark entered the game and got a strikeout to end the threat.
Clark then retired the side in the eighth and only allowed a two-out single in the ninth, before getting Jimmy Janicki to fan and end the game. Clark got the victory and improved to 4-0 as he fanned three and allowed just the one hit in the outing.
Southern Miss had to rally from four runs downs as the Trojans scored four times over the first three innings against Golden Eagle starter McCarty English.
After an RBI single in the first by Aaron Piasecki, the Trojans added three more runs in the third. Troy loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a hit by pitch in that third frame. After a fielder's choice to cut a runner down at home plate, Blake Cavill singled in a pair of runs before Drew Nelson added a run-scoring fielder's choice.
The Golden Eagles cut in to that margin in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer by Davis Gillepie, who hit his sixth of the year.
Two more runs in the sixth by the home squad allowed them to tie the game.
With one-out, Eubanks doubled when the Troy center fielder lost the fly ball in the sun. After another out, Seth Smith singled to center which drove home Eubanks. After a pinch-hit infield single by Ben Higdon, both Joey Urban and Kyle Morrison both walked. The second walk, which was issued to Morrison, drove in the tying run.
In addition to Clark's outstanding outing, Camden Sunstrom added four scoreless frames, and JW Armistead got two outs in the seventh, before allowing consecutive singles, necessitating the entrance by Clark to got out of the jam.
Cooper Ellingworth, the third of three Troy pitchers in the contest, allowed a run on three hits with a walk and no strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 0-2.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Starkville to face in-state foe Mississippi State. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
