Â
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action when they travel to in-state foe Mississippi State Tuesday for a nationally ranked matchup at Dudy Noble Field/Polk-Dement Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
Â
The Golden Eagles (19-5) rank as high as No. 11 in the latest national polls, while the Bulldogs (20-4) hold a ranking as high as No. 4. The game can be seen via SECN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
This will be the second meeting between the squads this season. Southern Miss captured a 7-6 decision in Hattiesburg earlier this month. Drey Barrett hit a three-run homer, while Seth Smith collected his first collegiate round-tripper of the season in the contest. The Golden Eagle raced out to a 5-0 advantage in the contest, before the Bulldogs rallied to take a one-run lead at 6-5. Southern Miss though scored on a pair of runs on wild pitches in the seventh to end up taking the victory.
Â
Heading into this contest, Kyle Morrison has paced the Golden Eagle offense through the first 25 games and currently has hit in 11-straight games and in 19 of his last 20 contests. Morrison leads the team in batting average with a .354 average to go along with eight home runs and 24 RBI. His hitting streak is the longest of the season for the Golden Eagles and during his current skein, he is hitting .410 (16-for-39) with 10 runs, three doubles, two triples, five home runs and 14 RBI. It is the longest hitting streak for the program since senior Joey Urban had a 13-gamer last season.
Â
Urban ranks second with a .319 average with seven homers and 23 RBI, while Davis Gillespie also is hitting at .319 with six long balls and 19 RBI. Seth Smith rounds out the Golden Eagle offensive leaders with a .304 average with a solo homer and 13 RBI.
Â
The Golden Eagles are fresh off a league series win at home over Troy last weekend, while the Bulldogs swept Vanderbilt in Starkville. Southern Miss looks to start junior right-hander Thomas Crabtree (0-1, 5.02 ERA) in the contest, while the Bulldogs will counter with righty Chris Billingsley, Jr. (1-0, 6.75 ERA).
Â
Following the Mississippi State contest, the Golden Eagles return home for a weekend Sun Belt Conference series as they entertain App State at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
