HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Matthew Russo collected three hits and drove in three runs as No. 12 Southern Miss celebrated Parrothead Day with a 11-5 Sun Belt Conference victory over Troy Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The win evened the series as the Golden Eagles (18-5 overall, 2-3 Sun Belt) donned special Parrothead themed jerseys for the contest. The deciding game of the set takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Southern Miss scored in six different innings including in the first on a wild pitch. Davis Gillespie reached on a two-out missed fly ball by the second baseman and then went to third on a single by Russo, before scoring on that wild pitch.
The Trojans rebounded in the next frame as they took their lone lead in the second. Troy strung together three consecutive hits with the last one being a two-run single by Sean Darnell to put the visitors up 2-1.
That lead did not last long as Joey Urban put the Golden Eagles up good in the bottom of the frame. After Tucker Stockman was hit by a pitch and Seth Smith tallied a bunt single, Caleb Stelly moved both runners up a base with a groundout before Urban knocked in both runners with a single through the left side.
Gillespie, who scored four times in the contest, homered to open the third to extend the Southern Miss lead as he belted his fifth round-tripper of the year.
Southern Miss added another run in the fifth on a Stockman RBI double and then extended the advantage to 8-2 with Russo driving in a pair of runs with a single, followed by a Drey Barrett sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Troy cut into the gap with a solo run in the seventh on a Josh Pyne RBI double and then added two more runs in the eighth, courtesy of a run-scoring double from pinch hitter Houston Markham and a RBI single from Darnell, who finished his day with three RBI.
With the game at 8-5, the Golden Eagles added three more runs to cushion the lead in the eighth. After a leadoff strikeout, Kyle Morrison walked. After Gillespie doubled to put two runners in scoring position, Russo drove in a run with a single. The second run came home courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to Stockman, before the final run scored via a wild pitch.
Kros Sivley, who came into the game in the second for Golden Eagle starter Thomas Crabtree, allowed a run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory and improve to 3-0. Josh Och threw the eighth, before JW Armistead finished the game with a scoreless final frame.
Trojan starter Dylan Alonso (3-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
Troy fell to 10-12, 3-2.
