HATTIESBURG, Miss. –  The Southern Miss baseball team returns home this weekend when they entertain Troy for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The set begins on Friday at 6 p.m., with the annual Parrothead game set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
Parrothead merchandise is available at Campus Book Mart, and beginning Friday, the Southern Miss Barnes and Noble Bookstore will as well. The Parrothead gear will also be sold at Pete Taylor Park over the weekend while supplies last. Prior to Saturday's contest, Lloyd Munn and the Forecasters, a Jimmy Buffet tribute show, will start when gates are opened two hours prior to the game.
All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The nationally ranked Golden Eagles (17-4 overall, 1-2 Sun Belt) continue their excellent start to the season after shutting out Nicholls 4-0 on Tuesday evening in Biloxi. The Golden Eagles are tied with two other years for the second best 21-game start to the season, trailing just the 2004 squad that opened the year with an 18-3 record.
Troy enters the weekend with a 9-11 overall mark, after opening its league season last weekend by defeating Old Dominion two of three games. The Trojans have won their last three contests including an 11-2 decision at Alabama State Tuesday.
Senior second baseman Kyle Morrison now leads the team in hitting with a .347 batting average to go along with six home runs and a team-high tying 21 RBI. He currently has an eight-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games. Fellow senior, center fielder Joe Urban, is next at .342 with seven homers and 21 RBI, while junior shortstop Seth Smith ranks third at .305 with a homer and 12 RBI. Junior left fielder Davis Gillespie rounds out the offensive leaders for the Golden Eagles with a .300 average to go along with four homers and 16 RBI.
For the first time in six weekends, the Golden Eagles have altered their weekend pitching rotation. Sophomore left-hander Grayden Harris (4-0, 2.33 ERA) moves up to Friday, while the Golden Eagles are undecided for Saturday's contest. Redshirt sophomore right-hander McCarty English (1-1, 2.30 ERA) remains in his normal Sunday slot.
Following the Troy series, the Golden Eagles hit the road again for a Tuesday midweek matchup at Mississippi State. That game time is set for 6 p.m.
