JONESBORO, Ark. – Davis Gillespie drove in three runs and Grayden Harris threw six shutout innings to lead No. 7 Southern Miss to a 7-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over Arkansas State Saturday evening at Tomlinson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (16-3 overall, 1-1 Sun Belt) evened the series after dropping an 8-5 decision Friday night.
Gillespie gave the visitors the early advantage in the top of the first. After a one-out walk to Matthew Russo, Gillespie homered to the opposite field as his fourth round-tripper went over the right field wall for an early 2-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Harris limited the Red Wolves (14-6, 1-1) to just six hits over six innings and fanned four with no walks to get the victory and improve to 4-0.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead with a solo run in the sixth. Ben Higdon, who reached base four times with a single, a double and two walks, drew a free pass to open the inning. The Red Wolves went to the bullpen in relief of starter Jack Nelson. Drey Barrett then singled to right, sending Higdon to third. He scored one batter later when Kyle Morrison grounded into a double play.
Nelson allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2.
Southern Miss added four insurance runs in the ninth to pull away in the contest. After a flyout to center to open the inning, Tucker Stockman walked. After a Seth Smith single, his second of the night, freshman Gray Eubanks drove in his first collegiate run with his first hit, a single up the middle. Joey Urban then walked to load the bases.
The Red Wolves then went to their third pitcher of the inning, who issued a bases-loaded walk to Russo in the only batter he faced. The final and fourth Red Wolves pitcher in the ninth got Gillespie to hit into an RBI fielder's choice and Higdon then doubled in a run before getting out of the frame.
Josh Och, who entered for the Golden Eagles to start the eighth, fanned three over two innings with his only blemish being a solo home run to pinch hitter Cason Campbell. Camden Clark then retired all three batters he faced in the ninth with one strikeout.
The deciding game of this series takes place on Sunday at 12 noon. The start time was moved up an hour due to expected bad weather in the area. The contest can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
