Baseball Drops Series Finale Sunday 5-2 at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State took advantage of two first-inning Southern Miss errors and added a pair of solo homers in the eighth to defeat the No. 7 Golden Eagles 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium to win a Sun Belt Conference series.
Southern Miss (16-4 overall, 1-2 Sun Belt) dropped its first league series since losing two of three at Marshall last April. A-State improved to 15-6, 2-1.
The Red Wolves jumped out early with three runs in the bottom of the first. After two were out, McCarty English surrendered a single to Patrick Engskov before giving up a walk to Evan Griffis. English then got a ground ball to short that initially appeared to end the inning, but it was misplayed by Seth Smith that allowed the first run to score. After a wild pitch to give A-State its second run, English got another ground ball, but it was booted by Kyle Morrison to allow the third run to score.
Southern Miss cut into the lead with a solo run in the fourth. With two outs, Davis Gillespie doubled to left center. Ben Higdon moved Gillespie up a base with an infield single, before scoring on a failed pickoff to get Higdon at first was thrown wild.
The Golden Eagles then cut the deficit to a run when Joey Urban homered to the opposite field, notching his seventh long ball of the season over the right field wall.
Southern Miss then had opportunities in both the seventh and eighth innings to get runs but came up empty
Higdon walked to open the seventh to chase Red Wolves starter Dylan Farley. After a strikeout, Kyle Morrison doubled to left center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. A-State, though, got another strikeout and a flyout to left to end the inning.
The Golden Eagles left two more runners on base in the eighth after loading them with one out. With two outs, a Red Wolves pitch got away from the catcher but ricocheted back to him off the backstop and Urban was tagged out at home to end the threat.
A-State then added to its lead with solo home runs in the bottom of the frame from Griffis and Cason Campbell.
Farley went six-plus innings to get the win and improve to 3-0 as he gave up both runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. English (1-1) suffered the loss by allowing three unearned runs on four this with two walks and three strikeouts to suffer the defeat.
Cooper Garrison got the final four outs for the Red Wolves to earn his third save.
The Golden Eagles now set their sights on Nicholls, who they will play Tuesday at Keesler Federal Ballpark in Biloxi. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
