HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team opens its fourth Sun Belt Conference season this weekend when they travel to Arkansas State for a three-game league set. The series opens Friday at 6 p.m., at Tomlinson Stadium.
All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (15-2) have won four consecutive contests after capturing a 2-1 decision Tuesday night at home against Ole Miss. Tucker Stockman provided the game-winning single in the ninth for the 36th walk-off win for the program since the start of the 2017 season.
The Red Wolves (13-5) bring in a two-game winning streak, and their wins this season have included one at Arkansas as well as a pair at Louisiana Tech.
In a series which dates back to 2005, Southern Miss has won all 15 previous meetings with the Red Wolves, including a three-game sweep in the only other meeting in Jonesboro two seasons ago.
Senior Joey Urban continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .365 average with five home runs and 17 RBI. He also has reached base for the Golden Eagles in all 17 games this season. Junior shortstop Seth Smith ranks second at .341, while Kyle Morrison holds a .328 average with team highs of six home runs and 20 RBI.
For the fifth consecutive weekend, the Golden Eagles will utilize its same starting pitching rotation. Senior Colby Allen (1-1, 2.61 ERA) is slated to start Friday, while current NCBWA national and Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Grayden Harris (3-0, 3.00 ERA) gets the nod on Saturday. Redshirt sophomore right-hander McCarty English (1-0, 2.70 ERA) is set to take the mound on Sunday.
The 15-2 start equals the best 17-game beginning to a Golden Eagle season with the 2004 season.
Following the weekend set, the Golden Eagles travel to Biloxi on Tuesday when they take on Nicholls. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Keesler Federal Ballpark.
