JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State scored four times in the seventh to break a deadlocked score in upending No. 7 Southern Miss 8-5 Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium in both team's Sun Belt Conference opener.
The Golden Eagles (15-3, 0-1 Sun Belt) saw a four-game winning streak snapped as well as falling to the Red Wolves (14-5, 1-0) for the first time in 16 all-time meetings.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the seventh, the Red Wolves loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk issued by Camden Sunstrom, who entered the game to start the frame. Aidan Houseworth then doubled to left to clear the bases and Cason Campbell followed with an RBI single to give the home squad a four-run cushion.
Southern Miss tried to rally in the eight with three consecutive singles by Ben Higdon, Drey Barrett and Kyle Morrison, but Tucker Stockman fanned and Seth Smith flew out to right to end the inning.
After A-State added an insurance run in the eight on a Parick Engskov RBI single, the visitors finally rallied in the ninth with two runs to close the final gap. Freshman Gray Eubanks, in his first collegiate at bat, reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Joey Urban then singled. After a Matthew Russo ground out to move both runners up a base, Davis Gillespie drove in both runs with a single. The Golden Eagles then grounded out twice to end the game.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the third inning. Smith opened the stanza with a walk. After Caleb Stelly reached on a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the pitcher and thrown wide to pull the first baseman off the bag to put two runners on, Urban blasted an opposite field home run to right for his sixth long ball of the campaign.
The Red Wolves, though, plated their first run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Lane Walton and then tied the game with a two-run shot by Kaden Amundson, for his first homer of the year.
Starter Colby Allen went five innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. After a scoreless frame by Kros Sivley, Sunstrom (1-1) suffered the loss by giving up four runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
A-State reliever Tyler Weimber (3-0) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed three hits with two strikeouts to earn the victory.
