HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's tennis (5-3) split a pair of home matches over the weekend, earning a 4-2 win over Norfolk State (2-4) on Friday before falling 4-0 to Kennesaw State (4-3) on Saturday at the USM Tennis Complex.
Southern Miss opened the weekend with a strong showing against Norfolk State, taking the doubles point and using that early edge to stay in front the rest of the afternoon. The Golden Eagles got doubles wins from Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo, along with Miranda Xu and Kamornwan Kornsila, to grab the opening point and set the tone.
That momentum carried into singles, where Southern Miss stacked wins to clinch the match. Blinova got the Golden Eagles started with a straight-set win, while Sudo and Hannah Chambers followed with victories of their own. Kornsila added the clincher as Southern Miss closed out the 4-2 team win on the home courts.
The quick turnaround brought a tougher test on Saturday against Kennesaw State. Southern Miss got a strong doubles win from the pairing of Sudo and Blinova, but the Owls claimed the other two courts to move in front 1-0. In singles, the Golden Eagles kept battling and forced Kennesaw State to work for the clinching points, but the visitors were able to finish off the 4-0 result.
Even with the split, Southern Miss came away from the weekend with another home win and continued to build match experience as the spring schedule moved forward.
