TROY, Ala. – Southern Miss women's soccer (2-6-1, 1-1-0 SBC) earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Troy (5-3-1, 0-1-1 SBC) on Thursday night at the Troy Soccer Complex, thanks to a standout performance from goalkeeper Maddie Ellis.
The Golden Eagles struck in the 64th minute when Chloe Taylor netted her first goal of the season, slotting home a right-footed finish into the top left corner. From there, it was all about defensive resilience, as Ellis delivered a commanding performance between the posts.
Ellis finished with a season-high 12 saves, controlling her penalty area and frustrating a relentless Troy attack. The effort not only preserved the win but also marked her first solo clean sheet of the 2025 campaign, showcasing her growth as a leader at the back.
Southern Miss produced 11 total shots, including seven on goal, and leaned on disciplined defending to withstand Troy's 21-shot barrage. The Golden Eagles held firm late, denying multiple quality chances and securing their second win of the season while evening their Sun Belt record at 1-1-0.
The result reflects the team's continued progress, with Ellis' heroics in net serving as a defining moment in the Golden Eagles' season so far.
