Golden Eagles Show Grit in Sun Belt Clash Against South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's soccer (2-7-1, 1-2-0 SBC) battled with energy and resilience but ultimately fell to South Alabama (7-2-0, 3-0-0 SBC) on Sunday afternoon at the Marshall Bell Track & Field and Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles held their shape early, but the Jaguars struck in the 12th minute through Mae Hunt and doubled their lead just before halftime on a finish from Juliana Lopes. Despite trailing, Southern Miss refused to back down, with Raquelle Mitchell forcing a first-half save and Paula Castro Garcia creating one of the team's best chances late in the second half.
Goalkeeper Maddie Ellis stood strong once again, recording three saves in the first 54 minutes before Lena Blake came in to close the match, adding a stop of her own. Together, the pair limited a high-volume South Alabama attack to eight shots on frame while giving Southern Miss a chance to build forward momentum.
While the Golden Eagles could not find the back of the net, their determination and grit were evident, particularly in the second half where the defense stood firm and the team continued pushing forward in transition.
