HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Matt Adams kept Arkansas State hitless through 6 1/3 innings and Carson Paetow drove in four runs as the Southern Miss captured an 8-0 Sun Belt contest Saturday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to capture the series.
The Golden Eagles (34-13 overall, 17-6 Sun Belt) won their eighth-straight contest as they tossed their third shutout of the year. The final game of the set takes place at 1 p.m., Sunday.
Adams kept the Red Wolves (23-23, 11-12) hitless until one out in the seventh, a single to Patrick Engskov, which ended his night on 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. Adams allowed only three base runners – one on a dropped fly ball in the first and the other a hit batsman in the sixth – with the last being the one-out single surrendered in the seventh. He fanned seven and did not walk a batter to register the victory and improve to 4-2.
Kros Sivley hurled the final 2 2/3 frames, whiffing three and only allowing just a hit batsman to reach base.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-out, two-run home run by Carson Paetow. It marked his 15th of 2025.
The Golden Eagles then put the game away with a four-run fourth. The home team loaded the bases via a single by Ben Higdon, his first of two for the contest, a walk to Braden Luke and a Hunter Stockman hit by pitch. Ozzie Pratt then knocked in the first run with a fielder's choice, before Jake Cook added an RBI single. Paetow then completed the inning's scoring with a two-run double to left center.
A two-run homer by Matthew Russo, his 14th, in the eighth provided the final tallies for Southern Miss.
A-State reliever Tyler Weimer (1-1) gave up two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts over three innings to suffer the loss.
The game marked the 22nd time this season Southern Miss has hit multiple home runs, improving to 18-4 in those affairs.
