HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 22 Southern Miss banged out 15 hits and catcher Tucker Stockman drove in four runs in a 14-2, seven-inning run-rule victory over Arkansas State at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field Sunday afternoon to complete a Sun Belt three-game sweep.
The Golden Eagles (35-13 overall, 18-6 Sun Belt) captured their ninth consecutive victory, while the Red Wolves fell to 23-24, 11-13. It was the third league sweep of the season for Southern Miss.
After giving up a pair of runs in the opening frame on three hits and a walk surrendered by Southern Miss starter Grayden Harris, the Golden Eagles scored the final 14 runs of the contest.
Southern Miss took advantage of a fielding error by Red Wolves third baseman Raul Torres to open the second on a Carson Paetow ground ball and parlayed that into six runs in the frame.
After the error, Drey Barrett singled and then Ben Higdon plated Paetow with a single. A-State starter Jack Hibbard then left the game with an injury and the new pitcher, Chase Richter, got a strikeout before surrendering a two-run single to Jake Cook and a run-scoring single to Nick Monistere. Paetow and Barrett later collected RBI walks to end the inning's scoring as Southern Miss sent 12 men to the plate.
Southern Miss then added four more runs in the fourth starting with a Joey Urban run-scoring single. Stockman followed with a drive one over the right centerfield wall for a three-run shot, his fourth of the campaign, to make the score 10-0.
The home team added two more tallies in the fifth on RBI singles from Urban and Stockman, before finishing their scoring in the sixth on a two-run blast from Matthew Russo, who homered in every game of the series. The round-tripper was his 15th.
Camden Sunstrom, who entered the game after Harris allowed a walk to open the second, threw a season-high four innings. He allowed just two A-State hits and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 2-0. Both Chandler Best and Landen Payne also hurled scoreless frames.
Hibbard allowed three unearned on three hits over an inning-plus to suffer the defeat and fall to 5-4.
The Golden Eagles homered for the 16th-straight game, tying a season high.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend as they finish their regular-season home schedule by entertaining Louisiana in a three-game league series. The set opens Friday at 6 p.m.
