HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 21 Southern Miss used a seven-run six inning to break open a close game and give the Golden Eagles a 15-5 run-rule victory over Louisiana Saturday afternoon to win a Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (37-13 overall, 20-6) captured their 11th-straight victory while also winning their 20th conference game for the eighth consecutive campaign.
All nine Southern Miss starters recorded at least one hit and eight of them drove in at least one run.
Freshman Drey Barrett led the way with four runs batted in on a pair of hits, while Joey Urban added two RBIs on a game-high three hits. Ben Higdon also added two of the 13 hits in the Golden Eagle attack.
With the home team leading by one run, the Golden Eagles exploded for seven runs on just three hits and took advantage of four walks and hit three batters by the Ragin' Cajuns (25-26, 15-11). Two of the runs in the pivotal inning were driven in via a single but Urban, while the other five came home via a bases loaded walk or hit by pitch.
Barrett then ended the game in the seventh with a two-run double that completed the run-rule win for Southern Miss.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with two runs. With one out, both Urban and Higdon singles, before Tucker Stockman drove in Urban with the team's first run. The UL left fielder misplayed the ball and Higdon scored on the play as well.
Southern Miss added made it 6-1 in the third as Matthew Russo belted his team-best tying 16th home run, a two-run shot to center, before Higdon plated a run with a single with Barrett knocking a triple to score the final run.
Golden Eagle starter Matt Adams then gave up two-run homers to both Blaine Lucas and Caleb Stelly, in the fifth and sixth innings, which closed the gap to one run at 6-5. The second homer ended Adams' day, but he registered the win to improve to 5-2 as he gave up five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks over 5 1/3 innings.
Colby Allen allowed a hit over the last 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts to garner his 10th save of the year and 17th of his career, tying him for seventh on the school's career chart.
UL starter Chase Morgan, who was a late scratch for Friday's game, allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 4-2.
The Golden Eagles go after their third-straight league sweep Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
