Â
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team concludes the home portion of its 2025 regular season this weekend when they entertain Louisiana for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
Due to commencement exercises being held at the school this weekend, Friday's game is set to start at 7 p.m., while Saturday will take place at 3 p.m. The series finale will start at 1 p.m., Sunday. All three games can be seen via the ESPN+ app, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
The Golden Eagles (35-13 overall, 18-6 Sun Belt) bring in a nine-game winning streak into the weekend and currently sit in second place in the league standings, trailing Coastal Carolina by two games. Southern Miss also leads third-place Troy by two games and the Ragin' Cajuns (25-24, 15-9) by three games with six left to play.
Â
Since joining the Sun Belt three years ago, the two teams have won two-of-three games in their respective home series the last two years, while the Golden Eagles defeated Louisiana 6-2 in the 2023 Sun Belt Championship game in Montgomery, Ala., during their inaugural season in the league.
Â
The two teams have met 64 times on the diamond with each school winning 32 times.
Â
Heading into the UL series, Southern Miss boasts 80 home runs as a team which includes at least one in each of the last 16 games. The Golden Eagles are on pace – if you project it over a 60-game schedule – to break the single season record for long balls as they look to eclipse the record of 95 set in 1997. Southern Miss is No. 19 nationally for home runs.
Â
Individually, Nick Monistere ranks tied for second in the league in this category and No. 27 nationally with 16, while Carson Paetow and Matthew Russo are next with 15 apiece. Both Davis Gillespie and Drey Barrett each have eight to tie for fourth best on the squad.
Â
The pitching staff has also put up some solid number this spring as they rank in the Top 20 in three categories. Those include being No. 18 in strikeout to walk ratio (2.72), No. 19 in walks per nine innings (3.42) and No. 20 in ERA (4.13).
