The Golden Eagles (38-13 overall, 21-6 Sun Belt) won for the 12th-straight game as they swept their third consecutive league series.
Joey Urban, Matthew Russo, Tucker Stockman and Nick Monistere all homered as Southern Miss has now gone deep in each of its last 19 games and 35 of the last 38. The team now has 87 homers this season, just eight shy of tying the school's season record of 95 set in 1997.
The Ragin' Cajuns (25-27, 15-12) jumped out in front early for the third-straight game with five runs in the second inning. UL sent 11 men to the plate in the frame. After a sacrifice fly by Jose Torres, the Cajuns got a pair of two-run singles from Drew Markle and Caleb Stelly to take the early advantage.
Southern Miss cut the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff homer from Urban, his fourth, and a run-scoring double from Ozzie Pratt.
The home team then added a two-run homer from Matthew Russo in the third, his 17th, before taking the lead for good in the fourth. Stockman registered his fifth of the season to open the fourth, before Monistere added a two-run shot to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. It was his 17th long ball of the year.
The Ragin' Cajuns added a fifth inning run on another Torres sacrifice fly, but that was as close as the Cajuns got the rest of the way. Southern Miss completed the game's scoring in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Pratt and a run-scoring single from Russo.
After Golden Eagle starter Grayden Harris got run from the game in the second, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits over 1 2/3 innings, Southern Miss' bullpen kept UL in check for the remainder of the contest.
Kros Sivley got a flyout to end the second, retiring the first seven batters he faced. He gave up back-to-back singles in the fifth and then recorded a punchout to end his day. Sivley threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed a run on those two hits with a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 5-1.
Josh Och followed with 1 2/3 scoreless frames, but did allow an inherited run to score, before Landen Payne hurled the final three stanzas, - allowing two hits with five strikeouts – to earn his fourth save.
UL reliever Dylan Theut gave up five runs on five hits and a strikeout over 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2.
The game marked the final home regular-season contest for seven Golden Eagle seniors: Matt Adams, Chandler Best, Ben Riley Flowers, Michael Fowler, Braden Luke, Carson Paetow and Pratt.
The Golden Eagles now conclude the regular season Thursday-Saturday at Troy. The opening game at Riddle-Pace Field starts at 6 p.m.
