Baseball Plays Returns Home for Final Non-Conference Game of Season versus UNO

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns home for the first of seven-straight home games when they entertain New Orleans in a Tuesday night contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

It will be the final non-conference game of the year for the Golden Eagles (31-13) as they have won five-straight contests.

Junior Ben Higdon has been the hottest Golden Eagle as of late, hitting .545 over his last five games with five doubles, three home runs and four RBI. He led Southern Miss over the weekend in its three-game sweep of Appalachian State with eight hits in the series.

Teammate Nick Monistere continues to be in a hitting groove, bringing in a career-best 11-game hitting streak into the UNO (23-18) contest. Over that span, his average is .463 with 17 runs, nine home runs and 28 RBI. Monistere, who now ranks No. 14 nationally in home runs with 16, leads the team in that category as well as ranking second in the Sun Belt. Monistere does lead the league in RBI with 56.

As a team, the Golden Eagles also rank nationally in home runs at No. 15 with 74, while their home runs per game of 1.68 hold a No. 17 mark.

This will be the only meeting between the two schools this season in a series dating back to 1970. Southern Miss leads the Privateers (23-18) in the series 63-52 and have won seven of the last 10 meetings.

Freshman Ty Long, who holds 1-0 record with a 7.50 ERA, starts on the mound for the Golden Eagles.
