HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jake Cook broke up a tie score with a three-run, seventh-inning home run to lead No. 22 Southern Miss over New Orleans 9-4 Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (32-13) won for the sixth consecutive game as they ended their non-conference schedule with a 17-7 mark.
Ozzie Pratt led the Golden Eagles' 12-hit attack with three hits, while Cook, Nick Monistere and Carson Paetow added two apiece.
With the score tied at 4-4, UNO reliever Ira Austin registered two strikeouts to open the frame. A fielding error and a walk gave the Golden Eagles life in the inning, before Cook homered off the scoreboard in left center to give the home team the lead for good. The long ball was the first of the season for Cook and his first home run since eighth grade.
The homer was the 75th for the team this season and 13th-straight game with a round-tripper.
Southern Miss added to its advantage with two tallies in the eighth. After a leadoff double by Drey Barrett, Ben Higdon recorded a run-scoring single. Higdon then went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Davis Gillespie single.
UNO (23-19) opened the game's scoring with a two-run homer in the first from Bryce Callaway, his 13th. That was the Privateers only lead as the Golden Eagles used a three-run third to push out ahead.
Pratt opened the third with a single for Southern Miss. After an out, Pratt went to second on a Monistere single and third on a Privateers fielder's choice that did not produce an out. Paetow then singled two runs in with a shot to right before Barrett finished the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Higdon knocked in another run in the fifth when he grounded into a double play to make the score 4-2.
UNO fought back to tie the score with two runs in the sixth. The Privateers strung together three hits and a pair of walks with Matt Gonzalez and Bryan Loriga both collecting RBI singles to account for the runs.
Southern Miss reliever Kros Sivley (4-1) surrendered just two hits over 1 1/3 innings to get the victory, while Colby Allen hurled two scoreless frames to finish the contest with two strikeouts to earn his ninth save. It was his 16th career save as he is in eighth place at the school in that category.
Austin, who threw the seventh inning, allowed three unearned runs on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 4-3.
The Golden Eagles continue their homestand Friday when they play host to Arkansas State for a three-game Sun Belt series. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. Tickets remain for this series and can be purchased by clicking here.
