BOONE, N.C. – No. 22 Southern Miss homered three times, including a three-run shot from Drey Barrett, to defeat App State 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Smith Stadium to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep.
The Golden Eagles (31-13 overall, 15-6 Sun Belt) won for the fifth-straight game, while recording their second league road sweep this season. The Mountaineers fell to 21-22 and 11-10 in league play.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first three and a half innings starting with a solo run in the first. After a flyout to start the game, Nick Monistere was hit by a pitch and went to third on a Matthew Russo single. Monistere then scored on a single to right by Carson Paetow. The Eagles could have done more damage but left the bases loaded in the frame.
Russo made the score 2-0 with a solo home run to right for his 12th of the campaign.
Drey Barrett belted his eighth homer of the year in the fourth to make it 5-0, before the Mountaineers responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame with four runs. App State opened the frame by stringing together four singles and a walk to account for the first two runs. The final two runs scored on a throwing on a ground ball to Barrett, before the inning ended with an out at the plate at the end of that play.
A fifth-inning Nick Monistere sacrifice fly made the score 6-4, before the lead was cut again to one after the Mountaineers added a run on an RBI groundout by Joseph Zamora.
Ozzie Pratt homered in the seventh, a solo shot for his sixth of 2025, and App State added a solo run in the bottom of the ninth to complete the scoring.
Golden Eagle reliever Kros Sivley threw two scoreless innings to get the win and improve to 3-1 with two strikeouts, while Landen Payne earned his third save by throwing the final two innings on nine pitches.
App State starter Everette Harris suffered the loss and fell to 1-4 after giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over the first 2 1/3 innings.
Southern Miss returns home for the first of seven consecutive home games Tuesday when they play New Orleans. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
