HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Georgia State homered twice and limited No. 23 Southern Miss to one hit in a 12-2, seven-inning victory Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to even its Sun Belt Conference series.
The Golden Eagles (26-13 overall, 11-6 Sun Belt) saw a two-game winning streak snapped.
Nick Monistere registered the only hit for Southern Miss, a two-run homer in the third inning, to give him a team-best 14 long balls this season. It was his fourth game in a row and fifth of his last six contests with a home run. He is the first Golden Eagle to homer in four-straight games since the 2022 season.
Monistere's homer tied the game after the Panthers (23-17, 9-8) got RBI singles from Michael Maginnis and Wills Maginnis in the top of the frame.
Michael Maginnis then added a three-run homer and Colin Hynek belted a two-run homer, both coming in the fifth, to give the visitors an 11-2 advantage. Kaleb Freeman earlier powered a four-run GSU fourth with a two-run double and the Panters added an RBI double from Cooper Milford in the sixth to account for the scoring.
Jake Hembree only gave up the Monistere two-run homer with five walks to go along with eight strikeouts over five innings to get the victory and improve to 1-1. Tysen Benford then retired all six batters he faced to end the game.
Golden Eagle starter Grayden Harris (4-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks with a strikeout to suffer the loss.
The rubber game of the set is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
