HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing the last two weeks on the road, the Southern Miss baseball team returns home to face Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia State at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in a three-game game series starting Thursday at 6 p.m.
All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (25-12 overall, 10-5 Sun Belt) return home for the first time since April 1 when they defeated Tulane 13-6. Southern Miss just completed an eight-game road swing Tuesday with a 4-4 mark, after defeating Southeastern Louisiana 8-7 in Hammond Tuesday night. Nick Monistere provided the difference in the contest with a two-out, two-strike grand slam in the top of the ninth which lifted the visitors to the come-from-behind victory.
Heading into the weekend, Southern Miss ranks tied for second in the Sun Belt standings along with Troy, sitting just one game behind leader Coastal Carolina, who swept Georgia State on the road last weekend. GSU (22-16, 8-7) fell from being tied for first place to sitting tied for fifth with Louisiana.
This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in Hattiesburg since the start of the 2000 season when the pair split a pair of games. The series renewal came last season when the Panthers outscored the Golden Eagles 46-30 and won two of three games over the set.
Current Sun Belt Player of the Week Nick Monistere continued his stellar play this week at SLU on Tuesday as he homered twice in the contest with six RBI. Monistere has driven in 16 runs over his last four games. He has also seen his average rise to .322, which has allowed him to take the team lead in runs batted in with 44 along with tying Carson Paetow as the team's home run leader at 12.
Senior Ozzie Pratt has also played well over his last five games, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with a homer and four RBI over that time.
It will be Hill Denson Bobblehead Night on Thursday with the legendary coach set to be in attendance at the park that evening. Grandstand tickets are available for all three games of the series by going to SouthernMissTickets.com.
Following the weekend series, the Golden Eagles finish the homestand with a pair of midweek games. Southern Miss will entertain Tulane for the second time this season, Tuesday, and welcome SLU to town, Wednesday. Both games start at 6 p.m.
