HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team finishes an eight-game road swing Tuesday with a 6 p.m., contest versus Southeastern Louisiana at Pat Kennelly Diamond.
The Golden Eagles (24-12) have posted a 3-4 on this current road swing which includes clinching their fourth Sun Belt Conference series of five this season last weekend at Texas State.
Southern Miss has provided some solid offense in April, posting a .308 batting average over the month's first eight games with 11 home runs and 50 RBI. For the season, the team holds a .292 batting average with 71 doubles, six triples and 53 home runs.
Three Golden Eagles have already produced double-digit home runs this season, including Carson Paetow with 12, and both Nick Monistere and Matthew Russo at 10 apiece. Paetow now ranks tied for No. 8 on the school's career home run list with 43.
Monistere, who drove in seven runs in Sunday's game at Texas State, leads the team in RBI with 38, while Paetow is next at 37, while Ozzie Pratt ranks third at 34 and Russo in fourth with 30.
On the mound, freshman right-hander Ty Long (1-0, 15.00 ERA) makes his first career start for the Golden Eagles.
The Lions (29-7) bring in a six-game winning streak to the contest and boast a team batting average of .306 with 63 home runs.
The two teams split a pair of contests last year with the Lions winning 7-6 in Hammond, while the Golden Eagles won 5-1 at Pete Taylor Park. In a series that dates back to 1948, Southern Miss leads 80-49 between the two schools.
Following the SLU contest, the Golden Eagles return home for a five-game homestand starting with a Sun Belt series with Georgia State. That series runs Thursday through Saturday due to the Easter weekend. Game times are 6 p.m., both on Friday and Saturday, with a 1 p.m. Saturday contest.
