HAMMOND, La. – Nick Monistere connected on a ninth-inning grand slam to lead No. 23 Southern Miss to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Golden Eagles (25-12) finished their eight-game road swing 4-4 as the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week – Monistere – homered twice and drove in six runs. It was his second-straight two home run game as he has driven in 13 runs over his last two games.
Southern Miss trailed 7-4, heading into the ninth before the first two batters were retired. Drey Barrett then drew a walk before Ozzie Pratt singled and Jake Cook also walked to load the bases. Lion closer Brady St. Pierre, who threw the final two balls to walk Cook, then faced Monistere in the critical at bat.
St. Pierre worked the count to 1-2 before Monistere clobbered the offering over the left field wall to give the Golden Eagles their first lead since the third inning. St. Pierre was tagged with the loss and fell to 1-1.
Reliever Camden Sunstrom (1-0) threw 2 2/3 innings for Southern Miss, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts to earn the victory. Colby Allen retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his seventh save.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the third with a run on three hits. Barrett and Pratt opened the frame with singles, before Cook reached on a bunt single. Monistere then grounded into a double play that gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
SLU (29-8) took its first lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Conner O'Neal, who belted his 11th of the year. The Lions then extended their lead to 3-1 one inning later on an RBI single from TJ Salvaggio.
Monistere tied the game in the fifth with a two-run home run, his 11th of the year, plating Cook who reached via a fielder's choice.
The Lions took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the stanza on an infield single by Jude Hall with the bases loaded. The lead was extended by two more runs in the sixth on a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Cook cut into the deficit with an RBI groundout to score Barrett, who singled with one out and went to third on a double by Pratt to right.
SLU loaded the bases again in the seventh and a single to right by Dane Watts drove in the home team's seventh run, but Carson Paetow downed a runner at the plate from right to end the frame.
The loss for the Lions snapped a six-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles return to action at home starting Thursday when they entertain Georgia State for the first of a three-game Sun Belt series Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The contest starts at 6 p.m.
