SAN MARCOS, Texas – Carson Paetow homered twice and drove in five runs to lead No 23 Southern Miss to 12-1 seven-inning run-rule victory over Texas State Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles (24-11 overall, 10-4 Sun Belt) captured the weekend series with the win while also evening their record to 3-3 on the current eight-game road swing. The final game is set for 11 a.m. Sunday.
Southern Miss starter Grayden Harris ran into trouble in the opening inning as he gave up two hits and three walks, but a double play in the inning limited the damage to only one run – an RBI single to Alan Shibley – allowing him to settle down after the first.
Harris surrendered just four batters to reach after the first, two on a hit by pitch, one via single and the last by a fielding error.
Harris (4-2) ended his outing by allowing that lone run on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, Southern Miss exploded for five runs in the frame. The first two runs scored via run-scoring singles from Tucker Stockman and Ozzie Pratt. Drey Barrett then plated Monistere and Russo with a three-run homer off the batter's eye in center to make the score 5-1. It was his fourth of the year and first round-tripper since March 25 against Nicholls.
Paetow then added to the Golden Eagle lead an inning later with his first home run of the game to right-center.
Leading 6-1 in the sixth, Southern Miss completed its scoring with six final runs. With two outs and a runner at first base, Jake Cook walked. Nick Monistere and Matthew Russo each followed with RBI singles. After a Davis Gillespie singled to load the bases, Paetow hit his 12th home run on the season, his second career grand slam, to complete the game's scoring.
For Paetow, it marked his fourth two-homer game of the season and the 43rd of his career, moving him into an eighth-place tie with Tommy Davis (1992-94) on the school's career home run list.
Texas State starter Jesus Tovar (1-3) suffered the defeat for the Bobcats (16-18, 6-8) as he allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings.
Josh Och pitched the final two innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing just one base runner with a double.
Monistere, Paetow and Barrett all had two hits to pace the Southern Miss 12-hit attack.
