
Men’s Golf Ranks Third after Opening Day at Memphis Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) shot rounds of 73 and 75 to help lead Southern Miss to a third place showing following 36 holes of the Memphis Intercollegiate Monday in Cordova, Tenn.
The Golden Eagles, playing at the par 72, 7,334-yard Colonial Country Club, shot team rounds of 303 and 297 as they totaled 600 over the first two rounds.
Fernandez tied for 11th after the opening day with the final round set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
Both freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) and Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) find themselves three strokes behind Fernandez with a 151 total and a 19th place tie. Javier shot a 76 and 75, while Amornchaichan added rounds of 75 and 76.
Both senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) and junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) are two strokes behind their two teammates at 153, tied for 26th place. Dupuy put together rounds of 80 and 73, while Burnham added 79 and 74. Dupuy's second-round total tied for the lowest round by a Golden Eagle on the day.
Walker Wise, a redshirt sophomore from Tupelo, Miss., playing as an individual, holds a 37th-place tie at 155 with rounds of 76 and 79.
The Golden Eagles trail leader Memphis (584) by 16 strokes and No. 10 Illinois (589) by 11.
