Men's Golf Looks to Build on Top-5 Finish at the Badger Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss men's golf team heads to Madison, Wis., for its second tournament of the fall, returning to the Badger Invitational as the defending champion. The three-day event, hosted by Wisconsin at The University of Wisconsin Golf Course, runs Sunday, Sept. 27, through Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Golden Eagles join a 19-team field that includes Illinois State, Western Kentucky, Western Carolina, North Dakota, Drake, Valparaiso, host Wisconsin, Oakland, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Appalachian State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Ohio, Northern Illinois, South Dakota, St. Thomas, Nebraska-Omaha and Southern Illinois-Carbondale.

Southern Miss returns to the Badger Invitational as reigning champion after topping last year's 14-team field with a 23-under 841, rounds of 279-278-284, cruising to a 10-stroke win over a tie for second between Southern Illinois and Illinois State. It was the second team title of that fall for head coach Eddie Brescher's squad, part of a 41-2-0 run against the nation through three events.

Coach Brescher is traveling a five-man lineup of senior Benjamin Fernandez, junior Matthew Javier, sophomore Jake Moffitt, senior Supakorn "Mic" Amornchaichan and freshman Franco Fernandez, with no individual entrant in this field. Three of the five were part of last year's title-winning group.

Benjamin Fernandez, then a junior, was one of the stars of that win, closing with a four-under 68 to help lock down a 69-70-68 and a tie for third individually.

Moffitt, then a freshman, led the field with 17 birdies at last year's Badger and carded 71-66-71 to tie for fifth.

Javier, then a sophomore, went 68-71-73 last year to tie for seventh, helping pace a Golden Eagles team that led the field with 70 birdies over the three rounds.

Amornchaichan returns for a senior campaign after placing in the top 10 twice and cracking the top five at the Seminole Intercollegiate a season ago, with a 72.91 scoring average. Franco Fernandez is back in the lineup after making his Southern Miss debut last week at the JT Poston Invitational.
