
Women's Tennis Blanks Alcorn State 4-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's tennis (4-5, 0-2 Sun Belt) secured a dominant 4-0 win over Alcorn State (4-12) Wednesday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex, sweeping the doubles point and claiming three straight singles victories to seal the match.
With the win, the Golden Eagles snapped a four-match skid and improved their home record to 4-2 this season.
The Golden Eagles started strong in doubles play, clinching the point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The pair of Gagana Mohan Kumar and Talia Wunnenberg secured a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot, while Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu delivered a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
In singles, Talia Wunnenberg gave Southern Miss a 2-0 lead with a walkover win at the No. 6 position. Malannia Vashkevich extended the lead to 3-0 on court two, taking the first set 6-1 before her opponent retired in the second. Sudo then clinched the match on court four with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Southern Miss was leading in three of the remaining singles matches when play was halted. Xu held an advantage at No. 3, Jordan Parker held a lead at No. 5, and Hannah Chambers was battling in the second set on court one.
The Golden Eagles have now won 13 consecutive matches against Alcorn State since 2005.
