Women’s Tennis Closes Regular Season with Split Weekend

Thibodaux, La. – Southern Miss (8-9, 1-2 SBC) closed the regular season with a split on the road over the weekend, falling 4-1 at UAB (9-11, 0-0 AAC) on Friday before coming up just short in a 4-3 match at Nicholls (6-13, 0-7 SLC) on Sunday. Angelina Blinova picked up Southern Miss' point in Birmingham, while Pimmada Lim and Kamornwan Kornsila each earned singles wins in the finale at Thibodaux.
UAB took the doubles point on Friday with wins on courts one and three. Kristyna Damaskova and Klara Kajabova defeated Blinova and Sakura Sudo, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles, while Julia Caffarena and Antonia Ende followed with a 6-4 win over Kornsila and Lim on court three. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu was left unfinished at 4-4.
The Blazers added singles wins on courts three, four and five to close out the match, but Blinova gave Southern Miss a point at the top of the lineup. She battled past Damaskova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 1 singles for the Golden Eagles' lone win of the afternoon. Sudo's match at No. 2 and Kornsila's match at No. 6 were both left unfinished when the team result was decided.
Southern Miss answered well to start Sunday's match against Nicholls, claiming the doubles point behind wins on courts two and three. Chambers and Xu earned a 6-2 win over Blanca Losada and Noemie Piquet at No. 2 doubles, and Kornsila and Lim followed with another 6-2 victory against Julia Bordiginon and Jada Iverson on court three. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Blinova and Sudo was left unfinished with Southern Miss trailing 4-3.
Nicholls responded in singles with wins on the top four courts, but Southern Miss kept the match tight with points from Lim and Kornsila at the bottom of the lineup. Lim rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Bordiginon at No. 5 singles, and Kornsila added a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory against Amal Grube Andersen on court six. Nicholls, however, got wins from Paulina Villegas, Aada Inna, Piquet and Losada to secure the team result.
The weekend closed the regular season for the Golden Eagles, who now turn their attention to the Sun Belt Championships in Rome, Ga.on April 22.
