FORT WORTH, Texas – Southern Miss hit three home runs and Kros Sivley tossed a career-high seven innings to help the Golden Eagles to a 5-3 victory over TCU Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium, evening the three-game weekend series.
The deciding game is set for 1 p.m., Sunday, and can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) snapped a three-game losing streak as they got solo home runs from Davis Gillespie, Carson Paetow and Nick Monistere. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak to TCU (7-3).
Gillespie got things going in the first with his home run halfway up the batter's eye in center to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. It was his team-best fourth of the year.
Ozzie Pratt extended the Golden Eagles' advantage to 2-0 with a third inning sacrifice fly.
Sivley walked two over the first three-plus innings, but did not allow his first hit until Karson Bowen singled with two outs in the fourth. The junior left-hander then gave up his only run of the outing on a fifth-inning solo homer to Anthony Silva for his first of the year.
Sivley ended his day by allowing the two walks and adding one strikeout on five hits to get the victory and improve to 2-0.
Paetow and Monistere hit back-to-back home runs off different pitchers in the eighth, before Pratt added an insurance via his second sacrifice fly of the game in the ninth to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 5-1. It was the third round-tripper each for both Paetow and Monistere.
Josh Och entered the game for Sivley in the eighth, and after allowing a leadoff walk, retired the next three batters he faced. Och started out the ninth by allowing a double and single. After a wild pitch to make the score 5-2, Och issued two walks to load the bases.
Southern Miss then went to Landen Payne who got a slow groundout for the second out, which also saw a run score on the play. He then fanned Isaac Cadena to end the game and record his second save of the year.
TCU starter Tommy LaPour (1-2) suffered the loss as he gave up two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.
