Men’s Golf Place Eighth at Hal Williams Collegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) fired a four-under 67 over the final 18 holes of the Hal Williams Collegiate in Mobile, Ala., Tuesday, to help Southern Miss finish eighth in the team standings.
Javier's final round was the lowest for the Golden Eagles this season as Southern Miss completed the 54-hole event at the par 71, 7,059-yard Robbert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Course. The 208-stroke total for Javier placed him tied for 15th in the individual standings. He shot par or below in all three rounds of the tournament.
Freshman newcomer Filip Sakota (Milan, Italy), who joined the program at mid-year, concluded his first tournament as a Golden Eagle with a one-under 212 for a 28th-place tie as he ended his event with an even-par 71. He also put together three rounds at par or below.
Both senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) and sophomore Benjamin Ferandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) ended their respective tournaments with a 214 score, having shot a 73 and 71, respectively, over the final 18 holes for a 36th-place tie. Junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) finished his event with a 74 over his last circuit to end with a 216 and a 52nd-place tie.
The Golden Eagles shot a final-round team score of two-under 282 for a total of 844, which was eight-under-par.
No. 15 SMU won the event with a 54-hole total of 827, followed by Kent State (828), Kansas State (832), Texas State (836), Memphis (839), UAB (840), SIU (843), Southern Miss (844), Davidson (845), Oral Roberts (846), host South Alabama (850), Louisiana Tech (854) and Seton Hall (868).
The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Dorado, Puerto Rico, for the Dorado Beach Collegiate, Feb. 23-25.
