ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men's golf mounted a 10-under round to jump three ranks and finish seventh in the final round of the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Wednesday.
"Heading into the final round today, we talked about being disciplined, but aggressive to close out and make a run," said head coach Eddie Brescher. "The guys stepped up and did a fantastic job of that. A great example of that maturity is what Matthew [Javier] did after his opening round. We talked about playing golf instead of the golf swing. He made the adjustment perfectly and, without me, did what we know he is capable of today."
Sophomore Matthew Javier tied his lowest round of the season, leading the team, and the second lowest with a 7-under 64 while showcasing a clean scorecard. The Ontario native made massive strides after a 7-over, round-one performance, followed by a 2-under 69 in Tuesday's second round. Javier soared 23 spots in the individual category to finish tied for 28th.
Freshman Jake Moffitt carded his second 4-under 67 of the regional with seven birdies, including four on the front nine. In the individual category, the Ripley, Miss., native finished in sixth place at 10-under after 54 holes. Moffitt had 16 birdies, tied for the third most in the field.
Coach Brescher added, "Huge shout out to Jake [Moffitt] for capping off a fantastic start to his collegiate career. He's got a very bright future ahead, and we're looking forward to continuing to develop him into one of the best players on the planet."
Junior Benjamin Fernandez posted a 2-under 69 with a strong front nine, highlighted by three birdies. Fernandez closed out his round strong with a five-hole stretch of pars and a birdie. The Paraguay native worked best on par-5s, ranked tied for 27th in par-5 scoring with a 4.67 stroke average.
The Golden Eagles jumped three ranks with a 10-under performance, falling just short of the cut to the NCAA Championships by two spots. Vanderbilt at 28-under, Louisville at 26-under, Auburn at 22-under, BYU at 20-under and Georgia at 19-under will all advance to the NCAA National Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Coach Brescher concluded, "The amount of maturity and grit this team showed to bounce back over the final 36 holes is amazing. This is arguably the best season our program has ever had. I'm proud of these guys and what they've accomplished this year. So, we're looking forward to making this a normal trend with our golf team."
Junior Supakorn Amornchaichan rounded out scoring for Southern Miss with a 3-over 74. The Thai native is tied for 16th most pars at the regional with 36, after adding nine from the day. Redshirt junior Walker Wise wrapped up the event with a 6-over 77, tallying two birdies to his total. The Tupelo, Miss., native was in the top 10 for his work on par-5s with a stroke average of 4.44.
