Men’s Golf Completes the First Round at NCAA Athens Regional

ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men's golf debuted in the NCAA Regionals with an 11th-place finish, concluding round one at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Jake Moffitt made a statement, ending the opening round in a tie for fourth place, carding a 4-under 67. With five birdies on the round, the freshman tied for fifth place in the category. Moffitt excelled on par-4s, ranked in the top eight with a stroke average of 3.82.

Supakorn Amornchaichan secured a 1-over 72 while recording 13 pars. The junior started the day with a bogey on hole 10 but found his footing with six straight pars and a birdie to finish his front nine even. Amornchaichan picked up six more pars in the back nine, leaving him tied for 12th in pars for the round.

The Golden Eagles shot a 5-over 289 through the first 18 holes of the NCAA Athens Regional to conclude the day in 11th. Louisville held first place with a 10-under while Auburn and Vanderbilt were in a tie for second at 7-under. BYU was in fourth at 6-under while Rice and Georgia rounded out the top five at 5-under.

Redshirt junior Walker Wise finished the day at 3-over 74, and junior Benjamin Fernandez closed out at 5-over 76. The pair combined for 20 pars and five birdies, with Wise in a tie for 52nd and Fernandez in a tie at 65th.

Sophomore Matthew Javier carded a 7-over 78 with 11 pars and one birdie, finishing the day in 71st. The Ontario native had a stretch of five straight pars in the back nine, capped off by a birdie, closing out the round strong.
