Men’s Golf Even Par After Strong Second Round at NCAA Athens Regional

ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men's golf moved to a tie for 10th place with a 5-under in the second round of the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Tuesday.

Junior Benjamin Fernandez posted a 3-under 68 with a clean scorecard; the only blemish came from a bogey on hole 18. The Paraguay native earned four birdies, three of which came from par-4s. Fernandez jumped 22 places as an individual, ending the day in a tie for 43rd.

Freshman Jake Moffitt and sophomore Matthew Javier each carded a 2-under 69, combining for nine birdies. Moffitt finished the day tied for sixth in the individual category while ranking in the top five on par-4s with a 3.82 stroke average. Javier climbed 10 spots to earn a tie for 61st place with his consistent work on the back nine, picking up a birdie and five pars over the span of six holes.

Southern Miss shot a 5-under 279 to conclude round two of the regional, improving to a tie for 10th at even par. Vanderbilt took possession of first place with a 15-under round, adding to its 22-under, with Louisville taking second at 19-under and Auburn in third with 14-under. Georgia and BYU round out the top five at 12-under and 11-under.

Redshirt junior Walker Wise rounded out team scoring for the Golden Eagles with a 2-over 73. The Tupelo, Miss. native recorded four birdies on the round with his best work on par-5s with a stroke average of 4.50, ranking in the top 10.

Junior Supakorn Amornchaichan posted a 3-over 74, closing out his round with a clean six-hole streak of five pars and a birdie. The Thai native was tied for first in pars with 27 after two rounds, gaining ground on par-5s with a 4.67 stroke average.
