Men’s Golf Holds Seventh after Opening Day at Dorado Beach Collegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) shot a five-under 67 to lead Southern Miss in the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate Sunday at Dorado, Puerto Rico.
Fernandez birdied six holes over his first circuit of the tournament and collected one bogey as he holds a third-place tie at the par 72, 7,119-yard TPC Dorado Beach-Sugarcane course.
It was one of three-below par rounds for the Golden Eagles as senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a 69, for a 10th-place tie, while freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) posted a one-under 71 to tie for 28th.
Both freshman Filip Sakota (Milan, Italy) and junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) each added a three-over 75 to sit in a 69th-place tie. Redshirt sophomore Walker Wise (Tupelo, Miss.), who is playing as an individual in the event, shot an even-par 72 to rank tied for 36th.
The Golden Eagles shot a six-under 282 over the first round, finding themselves tied for seventh place, behind host UNCG (273), Temple (275), Illinois State and Connecticut (278), Wofford and Loyola Maryland (280).
Southern Miss is tied Winthrop and ahead of Bryant (285), George Mason (286), Ball State and James Madison (288), Valparaiso (291), App State and Army West Point (294) and Old Dominion (295).
Round two will commence at 6:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
