Baseball Travels to Arkansas State for Final Sun Belt Road Series of 2024

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road for its final Sun Belt away series for the season as they travel to Arkansas State for a three-game series, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (31-17 overall, 15-9 Sun Belt) have won four-straight games heading into the weekend, trailing league leader Louisiana (18-6) by three games with six remaining in league action. Troy (16-8) ranks second while the Golden Eagles and Georgia Southern are tied for third in the standings. Arkansas State ranks No. 13 in the Sun Belt ledger with a 21-26-1 overall mark and a 7-16-1 record in league play.
With their 7-3 win at home last Saturday against Coastal Carolina, the Golden Eagles clinched their 22nd consecutive 30-win season in 2024. The 22-year streak for Southern Miss ranks as the longest currently held in Division I baseball.
The Golden Eagles travel to Jonesboro for the first time in their history for baseball this weekend as they lead the series 9-0 dating back to the 2005 campaign, when Christian Ostrander was an assistant coach for the Red Wolves. Ostrander worked for A-State from 2003-06.
In its last outing, Southern Miss captured a 6-5 victory over Coastal Carolina last Sunday marking the 12th one-run game this season for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss holds a 7-5 record in those contests and are 11-8 in games decided by one or two runs in 2024.
Golden Eagle senior designated hitter Slade Wilks currently holds a career-best hitting streak total at 21 games, which ranks tied for ninth at the school. Wilks is hitting .354 (29x82) over this span with seven doubles, a triple, five home runs and 25 RBI. He has six, two-hit contests during this span and one, three-hit affair. The school record for a hitting streak is 41 games set by Todd Nace during the 1991 campaign.
Wilks has also hit safely in all 18 true road games for Southern Miss this season.
Junior leadoff hitter Dalton McIntyre leads the team with a .384 batting average in 2023 and his team is 19-4 when he scores at least once in a game.
Following the Arkansas State series this weekend, Southern Miss returns home for the final week of the regular season which has them hosting both Ole Miss, Tuesday, and then Texas State, next Thursday through Saturday.
