
Southern Miss Travels to Monroe for the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Outdoor Track and Field squad travels to Monroe, La., for the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Championships starting Thursday at the Groseclose Track at Brown Stadium on the campus of ULM.
"We are healthy and running at our best at this time," said Southern Miss coach Jon Stuart. "We are expecting a tough meet at the Sun Belt Championships as there are a lot of great competitors in the league. It should be a great meet this weekend."
This will be the second year for the Golden Eagles to compete as members of the Sun Belt. The women's squad captured fourth last season, while the men placed seventh.
Over five meets this spring, Southern Miss has enjoyed 30 first-place showings and 132 top eight finishes.
The Golden Eagles established five school records this spring, including De'Aundre Ward, coming in the men's long with a leap of 7.87 meters at the MSU Bulldog Relays. Kelvin Chiku enjoyed a school-best mark in the men's 800 meters with a 1:48.71 at the LSU Alumni Gold meet.
Jada McDougle was a pair of two other records, including the women's 200 meters with a time of 23:07 at the LSU Alumni Gold, along with being a part of the 4x400 relay squad with a time of 3:53.33 at the Crimson Tide Invitational.
There will be an entry fee charged at the entrance to the stadium. The prices are $20 for a Championship Pass and $10 for a daily pass. All Sun Belt Conference students with a valid institutional student ID will get in free, as well as children ages six and under.
The meet starts Thursday with the men's decathlon at 10:30 a.m., followed by the women's heptathlon at 11:15 a.m. The women's hammer throw will start at noon, and the men's hammer throw will follow at 2:30 p.m.
Day 1 will also include the women's javelin (4:30 p.m.), women's pole vault (5 p.m.), men's javelin (6:30 p.m.) and the women's 10,000 meters (8:40 p.m.). The men's 10,000 meters is set for 9:10 p.m. for the final competition for the day.
Thursday's preliminary races will include the women's 1500m run (6:30 p.m.), men's 1500m run (6:50 p.m.), women's 400-meter hurdles (7:10 p.m.), and men's 400-meter hurdles (7:35 p.m.). The women's 200 meter-dash will start at 8:00 p.m., and the men's 200 meter-dash will follow at 8:20 p.m.
Friday's competition will start with finals of the men's decathlon (11 a.m.) followed by the women's heptathlon at 12 p.m. Finals in field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the men's long jump. Field event finals will continue with the women's shot put (3 p.m.), women's long jump (5 p.m.), men's shot put (5:30 p.m.) and will conclude with the men's pole vault at 6 p.m.
Friday evening's preliminary running events will begin with the women's 100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m., followed by the men's 110-meter hurdles at 5:15 p.m. Running events will continue with the women's 800 meters (5:40 p.m.), men's 800 meters (6 p.m.), women's 400 meters (6:20 p.m.), and the men's 400 meters (6:45 p.m.) The women's 100 meters (7:10 p.m.), and the men's 100 meters (7:35 p.m.) will finish the sprints for Friday.
Running events will conclude with two finals events featuring the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (8 p.m.) followed by the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:20 p.m.).
Championship Saturday will feature the rest of the field events beginning at 12 p.m. The women's 4x100-meter relay will be the first of the running events starting at 4 p.m. The final event will start at 7:35 p.m. (men's 4x400-meter relay), and the award ceremony will follow that event.
The 2024 Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be broadcast on ESPN+. All three days of the Championships will be shown live, starting with the running events each day. Field events will be recapped during the live broadcast each evening.
