MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Billy Oldham threw seven shutout innings and Slade Wilks ended a scoreless game with a two-run double in the eighth to lead Southern Miss past Coastal Carolina 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in its opening game of the Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (38-18) advanced in the winner's bracket to face Troy, who defeated App State 6-5 earlier in the day, at 4 p.m., Thursday.
"Really proud of that win, obviously a great pitcher's duel, Billy (Oldham) did a great job, and their guy did a great job,' said Southern Miss baseball coach Christian Ostrander. "Runs were hard to come by. So proud of our guys kind of staying in the middle of the ring and finally got a chance to strike there in the eighth inning and got some big hits out of Slade and Nick. Great game, very proud, a hard-fought win for sure."
Oldham limited the Chanticleers (34-22) to just one hit and a couple of walks over his start with nine strikeouts, while CCU starter Henry Weycker gave the visitors six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Despite missing scoring chances in the sixth and seventh frames, the Golden Eagles scored all five of their runs in the eighth. After back-to-back walks issued to Lawson Odom and Gabe Broadus to open the inning, Dalton McIntyre's bunt was fielded, and Odom was thrown out at third.
After a lineout by Pratt, who saw his hitting streak end at 13 games, Wilks spanked Dominick Carbone's 3-0 pitch of the top of the left field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
"I was looking for a fastball, just to swing on something middle of the plate and that's what I got," said Wilks. "I was looking for it (the green light)."
Wilks waited until that final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 29 games, which is now the third longest in school history, behind only Todd Nace (41 games in 1991) and Michael Artman (33 games in 1999).
The Chanticleers then went back to the bullpen and the new pitcher immediately hit Davis Gillespie, before Nick Monistere belted an Alexander Meckley pitch over the 400-feet sign in straight-away center, a three-run shot, for his ninth round-tripper of the year in completing the game's scoring.
Colby Allen scattered two Chanticleers hits over the last two innings and fanned two while not allowing a run or walk to earn the victory and improve to 8-2 on the year. CCU reliever Trevor Hinkel walked two and gave up two runs without collecting an out to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2.
The shutout was the first for the Golden Eagles this season.
The Troy game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network with live audio also available through SouthernMiss.com.
