MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dalton McIntyre's eighth-inning tapper in front of the plate with the bases loaded drove in the go-ahead run in lifting Southern Miss to a 6-5 Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Baseball Championship comeback victory Thursday evening over Troy at Riverwalk Stadium to stay in the winner's bracket.
The Golden Eagles (39-18) won for the 12th time over the last 13 games and will enjoy a day off Friday due to opening the tournament with two wins. Southern Miss returns to the field Saturday at 9 a.m., against the winner of Troy and App State's Friday elimination contest.
Matthew Russo had a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the Golden Eagle offense, while McIntrye added three hits and Seth Smith had a pair of hits as well in the 11 Southern Miss hit attack.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Slade Wilks led off the frame with a walk – the first of the night issued by the Trojans (37-21). After a fielder's choice to erase Wilks at second, Nick Monistere walked. The left-handed Russo then slapped a 1-2 Jay Dill pitch deep to left field allowing both runners to score and tie the game.
After an intentional walk to Smith and a strikeout, McIntyre slapped a 2-2 pitch right in front of home plate. The throw to first was late and Russo scored what proved to be the winning run for the designated home team.
The Golden Eagles had fallen behind early as the Trojans scored the game's first run first on an RBI single from the nation's RBI leader Brooks Bryan.
That lead lasted until the second when Southern Miss pounced for three runs on four hits. With one out, Monistere singled, before scoring on a Russo double to deep center. A single from Smith, the next batter, plated Russo and then scored one a Gabe Broadus double to left.
The Trojans scored three runs in the third to go up 4-3 with two runs coming courtesy of a two-run homer by Will Butcher for his 16th of the year and then an RBI bases-loaded walk to Will Arnett. Butcher added a run-scoring single in the sixth to extend the Troy lead to 5-3.
After Niko Mazza gave up four runs over three innings, Chandler Best went 2 2/3 innings of allowing just one unearned run with no hits, two walks and three strikeouts, before JB Middleton threw 2 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing a hit and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 1-1. Josh Och threw a perfect ninth with two saves to earn his first save.
Dill suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 as he gave up two runs on a hit with two walks over a third of an inning.
Wilks increased his hitting streak to 30 games with a third-inning double.
