HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team wraps up its 2024 regular season this weekend when they play host to Texas State in a Sun Belt Conference series starting at 6 p.m., Thursday, from Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
The Golden Eagles (35-17 overall, 18-9 Sun Belt) bring in a season-best eight-game winning streak which is the longest since winning 14 consecutive games late last season. Southern Miss, who ranks No. 2 in the league standings, look to solidify that seed for next week's Sun Belt Conference championship starting Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
Two wins in the series gives the Golden Eagles their eighth consecutive season.
Â
Texas State (26-27, 12-15) holds a 10th-place tie with Georgia State and are fighting for one of the 10 spots in next week's tournament. They took two of three at home from Troy last weekend but lost 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Tuesday, at McNeese.
Â
It will be senior weekend for Southern Miss with eight Golden Eagle seniors set to be honored prior to the Saturday 1 p.m., regular-season finale. Those individuals will include players Will Armistead, Cole Boswell, Billy Butler, Graham Crawford, Brady Faust and Slade Wilks, along with student equipment managers Christian Nesser and Conner Martin.
Â
Wilks, and junior Ozzie Pratt, have led the Golden Eagles offense as of late.
Â
Wilks currently enjoys a 25-game hitting streak and is hitting .380 over that span, going 38-for-100. His streak ties for the fifth longest in school history with Kameron Brunty (2009).
Â
Pratt currently owns a 10-game hitting streak and has collected multi-hit games over his last eight contests. He is hitting .511 (23-for-45) over this stretch with 16 runs, five doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI.
Â
This will be the second-ever series between the two schools as the Bobcats won the initial meetings last season in San Marcos, Texas, two games to one.
Â
All three games this weekend can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through the website at SouthernMiss.com.
