HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss plays the first of four home games this week when they welcome New Orleans, Tuesday, to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for a 6 p.m., for a midweek contest.
The game will be shown via ESPN+ and can heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as through SouthernMiss.com.
This game marks the second meeting between the two clubs. The two teams met earlier this season in February at UNO with Nick Monistere and Matthew Russo each tallying three hits while driving in five runs apiece to lead Southern Miss to a 15-10 victory. Golden Eagle reliever Chase Adams retired all 10 batters he faced with four strikeouts to garner the win.
In the overall series, Southern Miss leads 62-52 and are 33-23 against the Privateers in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles have won the last three meetings over UNO at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss looks to rebound from dropping a series 2-1 at Louisiana last weekend. Southern Miss split the first two games, before dropping the finale 13-7.
In the weekend series, though, Slade Wilks extended his career-best hitting streak total to 17 games. He is hitting .333 (22x66) over this span with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 19 RBI. His hitting streak is just four games away from a five-way tie for ninth place at the school, which includes Chase Scott (2015), Isaac Rodriguez (2013), Taylor Walker (2009), Beau Griffin (2005) and Jeremy Albritton (1997).
The UL series also saw the return of Seth Smith, who returned to action from injury for the first time since being out March 16 against Marshall. He reported as a late defensive replacement in Saturday's game, before reporting as a pinch hitter in Sunday's contest, getting a hit and then adding another hit later in the contest.
First-year Golden Eagle head coach Christian Ostrander said junior right-hander Drew Druckenmiller from Mobile, Ala., will get the start for the program. This is his eighth appearance and third start of the year, and he has no record with an 11.00 ERA. This will be his first start since April 16 against Nicholls, in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings of work.
Following tonight, Southern Miss plays host to Coastal Carolina in a key Sun Belt Conference series, before traveling to Arkansas State next weekend. The final week of the regular season has Ole Miss coming to Hattiesburg (Tue., May 14), before playing host to Texas State, Thursday through Saturday that week.
