HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the second time in three games, Gabe Broadus delivered a late go-ahead single to lead Southern Miss to a 5-4 comeback victory over New Orleans Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (28-17) rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth, as right-handed reliever Colby Allen also shut down the Privateers (24-20) over the final two innings.
With the score tied 4-4 in the eighth, Matthew Russo was hit by a pitch to open the frame. After a Lawson Odom sacrifice, Broadus singled the other way to right field and plated pinch runner Brady Faust on the play for the game-winning run. Broadus also delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the ninth at Louisiana last Saturday.
Southern Miss had opened the seventh with a pair of outs before Dalton McIntyre and Ozzie Pratt delivered back-to-back singles. UNO then went to the pen and Slade Wilks welcomed the new pitcher by singling to left and knocking in a run. Davis Gillespie followed with a two-run double to left, with Wilks scoring all the way from first base, to tie the game.
Allen retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings, fanning five of them, to get the victory and improve to 6-2.
The Privateers' Nathan Blasick, the fifth and final UNO pitcher of the evening, gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout over the final 1 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 2-2.
UNO scored the game's first run on a Miguel Useche RBI double that fell in front of Gillespie and added to their lead in the third on a sacrifice bunt by Diego Villesecas that was thrown wildly to first by Southern Miss reliever Chase Adams resulting in a tally for the visitors.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of a UNO error in the bottom of the third on a throw that got past the first baseman and down the line on a Dalton McIntyre bunt. McIntyre ended up at third base and scored a batter later on a Pratt single.
UNO added its final two runs on RBI singles from Alexander Saunier in both the fifth and seventh innings.
McIntyre and Wilks led the Golden Eagle attack with two hits apiece. Wilks extended his hitting streak to 18 games in the process.
Southern Miss continues its homestand when they welcome Coastal Carolina to The Pete this weekend for a key Sun Belt Conference series. The series begins Friday with a 6 p.m. contest.
