Southern Miss Falls in Series Finale to Louisiana

Louisiana (33-13, 17-4 Sun Belt) struck first in the first inning with a two-run Kyle DeBarge home run to right field. Southern Miss (27-17, 12-9 Sun Belt) responded in the next frame with a crooked number of its own. Carson Paetow (Vancleave, Miss.) and Nick Monistere (Brandon, Miss.) made their way on base after being hit by pitches on consecutive at-bats. Matthew Russo (Madisonville, La.) drove in Paetow with a single to centerfield and Monistere crossed home thanks to Lawson Odom's (Laurel, Miss.) single up the middle.
Odom's single marked the fourth consecutive Golden Eagle batsman to reach base safely in the frame. Kros Sively (Sumrall, Miss.) tossed a clean second inning after facing the minimum before Southern Miss was unable to score two runners in the first of the third.
In the last of the third, the Cajuns plated six runs on five hits and a Southern Miss error to take an 8-2 lead. Four of the UL runs came off the bat of designated hitter Luke Yuhasz' grand slam before the Golden Eagles were able to close out the frame.
The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings but Louisiana seemed able to answer each output, scoring two and three in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Graham Crawford (Sumrall, Miss.) and Paetow scored in the ninth inning to reach the game's final score of 13-7 in favor of the Cajuns.
Sivley suffered the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. Louisiana's Blake McGehee earned the win after two shutout innings of relief and David Christie earned his third save of the season after 3 2/3 innings in relief.
Seth Smith (Mobile, Ala.), in his second game back from injury, recorded two base knocks. Smith finished 2-for-2 at the plate as one of four Golden Eagles to record two at least two hits. Russo led the way for the Golden Eagles at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
