The Golden Eagles (24-14 overall, 10-6 Sun Belt) won for the third-straight contest, while the Warhawks (17-20, 5-11) dropped their third consecutive game. Game two of the series has been moved up three hours due to expected inclement weather in the area on Saturday and the game will now start at 11 a.m.
Southern Miss scored in each of the first three innings, including a pair of runs in the first. Davis Gillespie opened the scoring with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot off the scoreboard in the first, to give the Golden Eagles the early advantage.
After ULM tied the game on a pair of sacrifice flies in the second, from Colby Lunsford and Kade Dupont, before the Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame with two sacrifice flies of their own by Nick Monistere and Slade Wilks.
Leading 4-2, Southern Miss then took control of the game in the bottom of the third with its 10-run inning.
After Billy Butler and Matthew Russo led off the inning by both being hit by a pitch from reliever Chipper Menard, a Tucker Stockman sacrifice bunt was thrown wildly by the pitcher and the first run came home. An RBI single from Gabe Broadus knocked in the second run, before the next two runs scored via different wild pitches. Nick Monistere tripled and scored on a Wilks for the fifth run.
Another Warhawk error in the on a ground ball to second opened the rest of the scoring for the Eagles' inning. Following the error, Butler singled in a run, before the seventh run scored on a ULM balk. Stockman then singled in a run before Broadus completed the scoring with a two-run single of his own.
The 10-run inning was the first for the Golden Eagles since facing Arizona State in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on May 31, 2019.
ULM plated their final run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Michelle Artzberger.
Oldham hurled his first complete game and rebounded from a loss last weekend at Georgia State, by limiting the Warhawks to three runs on two hits with two walks and a season-high tying eight strikeouts. He improved to 5-1 with the victory.
He retired 10 in a row at one point and his two hits allowed, both doubles, came in the second and then sixth inning. Oldham also retired the final six batters he faced.
ULM starter Cam Barlow went two innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 1-3.
The Golden Eagles registered their ninth-straight game with 10 or more hits.
